Khanki Barrage Project

The old Khanki head works (constructed in 1892) is located on Chenab River in Wazirabad Tehsil of Gujranwala District about 52 km downstream of Marala Barrage and 32 km upstream of Qadirabad Barrage. It feeds Lower Chenab Canal (LCC) with a discharge capacity of 330 cms on its left bank. The head works flood disposal capacity is 22,857 cms (8,00,000 cusecs). The existing head works, having served its purpose for more than 120 years, is liable to face a major failure. The high floods exceeding the design capacity cause damage to the river training works. The design discharge capacity of the existing structure falls considerably short of 100 years return period flood, now estimated at 31,148.5 cms. (11,00,000 cusecs). Absence of a road link between left and right banks of the head works is a serious constraint in the movement of operational staff, equipment and material particularly during high flood period.

The Punjab Irrigation Department (PID) has proposed to construct a new Barrage at Khanki about 300 m (900 ft) downstream of the existing weir with the financial assistance from Asian Development Bank (ADB). The main components of the project are as under:
  1. Construction of a main gated weir consisting of 55 bays each 18.29m (60ft) and 10 under sluice bays 18.29m (60ft) each with manually and electrically operated control of gates through a central control system.
  2. Construction of new Regulator for LCC with 6 bays of 19.14m (30ft) each.
  3. New Barrage will have two abutments and 62 piers whereas LCC head regulator will have 2 abutments and 5 piers.
  4. The bridge on the main Barrage will be 1,336m (4,384ft) long whereas the bridge on head regulator of LCC will be 65.5 m (215ft) long.
  5. Construction of two fish ladders, one on the left and one on the right side of the Barrage.
  6. Extension of Guide Bank of existing head works by 300 m (900ft) to accommodate the new Barrage.
  7. Construction of Silt Excluders in first two bays of the left under sluices having 8 tunnels.
  8. Construction of approach roads and improvement of the existing road network.
  9. Rehabilitation / construction of Residential / Official Building Infrastructure and River Training Works.
